Christmas Tree Growers Feel Effects of Drought
Tens of thousands of Christmas trees on farms throughout Wisconsin were killed by the last summer’s drought, with growers in southern Wisconsin hit especially hard. More than 1 in 5 Wisconsin Christmas tree farms suffered drought damage, according to state figures. Wisconsin is home to more than 1,100 Christmas tree farms. Read More

Massachusetts to Replace ALB-Affected Trees
The state of Massachusetts announced that it’s providing the last $3 million needed to replant 30,000 trees in the central Massachusetts area hard hit by the Asian longhorned beetle. The $3 million is part of $9 million in public funds allotted for the replanting, including federal, state and local money. Read More

Arborists Help Widow of Man Killed Fighting Wildfires
A crew of more than a dozen men cut down diseased pine trees for a widow whose husband died in July fighting Western wildfires with the North Carolina National Guard. The effort was organized by the Charlotte Arborists’ Association with the help of Piedmont Tree Experts, Denton’s Tree Service, Heartwood Tree Experts and Layton’s Tree Service. Read More

Paladin Attachments Contributes to Sandy Relief
Paladin Attachments recently made a significant contribution to the Salvation Army's Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund by donating a total of $11,882 raised by the company. Employees at all of Paladin’s facilities were encouraged to raise money for the cause. Many simply gave generous donations, whereas others got a little creative. Read More

EAB Found in New Iowa Locations
Five insect larvae with characteristics that are consistent with the emerald ash borer have been found in two sentinel trap trees in Allamakee County, Iowa. This is the farthest west the insect has been found in the Iowa, and also the first time emerald ash borer has been found in a sentinel tree in the state. The natural progression of the beetles by flight is estimated to be 2 to 5 miles per year. Read More

Program Helps to Regrow Trees Lost to Wildfires
The ReLEAF program distributed 500 trees to area residents in Grimes, Montgomery and Waller counties in Texas who were affected by the 2011 wildfires across the area. Professionals from Society of American Foresters, International Society of Arboriculture, Texas Master Gardener and Texas Master Naturalist were on hand to teach the new tree owners about their trees. Tree Company, Electrical Contractor Pay Fines for Wildfires
An electrical contractor and tree-trimming company have agreed to pay $370 million to settle lawsuits over wildfires that swept San Diego County in 2007. The utility argued that Davey Tree was responsible for keeping power lines clear of vegetation in the area where a falling tree branch allegedly sparked one blaze. Read More
