Arborist Discovers Country’s Largest Maple
The tallest maple tree in the country, and possible the world, has been discovered by Mario Vaden, an arborist from Beaverton, Ore. Vaden found the 157.8-foot maple in the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. He also discovered the world’s tallest pine and hemlock trees. Read More

One Million Trees for NYC
Mayor Bloomberg’s MillionTrees NYC (MTNYC) initiative is on a mission to plant and care for an additional million trees throughout the five boroughs within the next decade, and they need volunteers. According to MTNYC, in total, 1,365 New Yorkers helped plant 18,460 trees in a single day. Read More

EAB Invades Smoky Mountains
The emerald ash borer has made its first incursion into the backcountry of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where it could do serious damage to hardwood forests, according to National Park Service biologists. An off-duty park employee discovered the infestation in early November. Read More

Superstorm Sandy Claims Thousands of Trees
The winds of Superstorm Sandy took out more trees in the neighborhoods, parks and forests of New York and New Jersey than any previous storm on record. Nearly 10,000 were lost in New York City alone, and New Jersey utilities reported more than 113,000 destroyed or damaged trees. Read More

More than 80,000 oak trees in San Diego County have been killed by the invasive goldspotted oak borer beetle over the last decade, according to the Center for Invasive Species Research. The Cleveland National Forest has taken the brunt of the massive oak die-off. Read More

Arborist Assesses Monclair Sandy Damage
Cleanup of Superstorm Sandy continues in Montclair, N.J., where there were 42 reports of trees falling onto homes, 214 trees and large limbs that came down on private property or roadways and 180 township trees that were lost in the storm. Read More
