Boston Passes Concussion Safety Training Ordinance
If an independent athletic group wants to use a Boston athletic facility they'll have to first provide concussion safety training to all coaches, players, referees, trainers and volunteers. A new ordinance makes the training a prerequisite for a permit to use city-owned facilities. The Boston City Council passed the ordinance last week. Read More

Drought Makes Fields Dangerous
The dry conditions plaguing the U.S. this summer have presented challenges for high school sports programs preparing for the fall season. At many schools, an already tight budget was squeezed even tighter as groundskeepers tried to figure out how to get dry, parched practice fields into playable shape. Read More

Reddehase Named PCL Sports Turf Manager of the Year
Round Rock Express Head Groundskeeper Garrett Reddehase was named 2012 Pacific Coast League Sports Turf Manager of the Year. Reddehasse, a Temple, Texas, native, is in his third season with the Express and was the recipient of the PCL's 2011 Presidential Commendation as second runner-up for the annual Sports Turf Manager award. Stadium Reopens After Almost 30 Years
A Youngstown, Ohio, field that sat empty for years is home to the new Rayen Stadium. The Youngstown City Schools have not had their own stadium for decades. Since 1983 teams have played at Youngstown State University's Stambaugh Stadium or traveled to away games, but that has changed this football season thanks to the $3.2 million project. Read More

Nippert Stadium Named Best in Big East
USA Today has ranked Nippert Stadium the best football stadium in the Big East Conference. Nippert is the conference's smallest stadium, and also one of the oldest in the country. Rutgers' High Point Solutions Stadium, Syracuse's Carrier Dome and Louisville's Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium were also high on the list. Read More

UC Berkeley Reopens Stadium
Following a $321 million overhaul, California Memorial Stadium at UC Berkeley has reopened. In addition to a seismic retrofit, crews added 100,000 square feet of new turf surfacing, lowered the field by 4 feet to improve sight lines for fans, replaced splintery wooden bleachers with aluminum ones and installed a new sound system. Vandals Rip Up Soccer Fields
Costly vandalism has put two soccer fields out of commission temporarily at the twin campuses of Scotland and Barlow Mountain elementary schools in Connecticut. The Scotland field got the brunt of the damage. Deep ruts in both fields appear to be the work of a 4WD SUV. Costs for the repair work could range from $5,000 to $10,000.

Memorial Stadium Gets New Field
Memorial Stadium, a 64-year-old Baton Rouge, La., landmark got new grass and a new drainage system. The $70,000 Memorial project started in March when the old bermudagrass was sprayed numerous times and killed. Irrigation and drainage systems were installed, and the field was replanted with Celebration two months ago. Read More
