Toma Elected to Royals Hall of Fame
George Toma, the legendary groundskeeper, is the 25th member of the Royals Hall of Fame. He will be inducted at Kauffman Stadium prior to the Royals-Twins game on Friday, August 31. Toma established himself after taking over as head groundskeeper of the Kansas City Athletics in 1957, transforming a notoriously poor field at Municipal Stadium into one of baseball's best. Brewers' Groundskeeper Dies
The entire Milwaukee Brewers organization was shaken by the death of grounds crew member Jeff Adcock, who was stricken by an apparent heart attack during a game and later died. Adcock, 51, had been on the Brewers' ground crew for 33 years. The Miller Park grounds crew workers will wear a "JA" patch on their uniforms for the remainder of the season. Read more

New Artificial Turf Recycling Process Developed
Turf Reclamation Services (TRS) has developed a unique solution for artificial turf removal and recycling. It's a combination of new equipment that slices and rolls the turf carpet and a new recycling process that extracts the infill and recycles the carpet. The turf can be repurposed into a secondary market or be recycled into new products such as synthetic turf infill. Read more

UNLV Stadium Could Become a Reality
It appears very likely that the UNLV Rebels will have a new home in the not-too-distant future. The project is a partnership between the university and Majestic Realty Co., which built the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and could cost as much as $2 billion. Officials hope a large, covered venue could offer more opportunities to host larger events. Read more

Troy Installing New Turf
Troy University's Veterans Memorial Stadium will have a new playing surface for home games this fall. Installation of the new ProGrass Blend playing surface began with the removal of the old AstroPlay surface that was installed in 2003. The installation is expected to take approximately three weeks and will be completed before football reports for fall camp. Read more

KCMO Park Gets Cleaned Up
The fields at Cleveland Park in Kansas City, Mo., got a facelift thanks to a $50,000 gift from the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, and some additional help from Sports Turf Management. Following a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game legacy project, the park’s four renovated fields played host to the Jr. RBI Classic tournament. Read more

Armyworms Invade New York
Armyworms have been found across New York state. Armyworms have invaded New York state before, in 2001 and 2008, but this year's infestation appears to be worse. The pest first appeared in western New York and is being reported as far north as Jefferson County and as far east as Washington County. Golf courses and athletic fields planted with turfgrass could be attacked. Read more

Rhea County High Gets New Field
Rhea County will be the first public school in southeast Tennessee to play its home football games on artificial turf. As part of major construction on the Evensville campus, including the building of a new high school, Rhea County will have a new track encompassing an Astroturf playing surface. Officials hope the new field will save the school $17,000 annually. Read more
