OSTMA Honors Beavers Field
The Ohio Sports Turf Managers Association has named Beavers Field, Lancaster, Ohio, its 2011 Field of the Year. Beavers Field was among five finalists for the award, a list that included stadiums from universities in Ohio. The field is home to the Ohio American Legion tournaments, the Ohio High School Regional Tournament and the Ohio Regional Campus College Tournament. Read More

Michigan Stadium to Host 2013 Winter Classic
The Detroit Red Wings will host the Toronto Maple Leafs in the annual outdoor Winter Classic hockey game on the field at Michigan Stadium on January 1, 2013. A report said 45,000-seat Comerica Park was discussed as an option, but the NHL wanted Michigan Stadium because it can host around 110,000 fans. A rink still will be built on the grass at Comerica for other games in the days before the Winter Classic.

Wrigley Field Goes High-Tech
Team executives announced that the Cubs will build a patio deck in the right-field bleachers and install an LED board that's roughly 70 feet wide. The Cubs intend to collapse six rows of bleachers into three and raise the seats, to improve the obstructed views into center field. This reconfiguration won't change the distance to hit a home run and shouldn't impact wind patterns. Read More

University of Minnesota Building New Stadium
The University of Minnesota is seeking an architect and contractor to build a new baseball stadium to replace the 40-year-old Siebert Field. The new artificial turf field is expected to cost $7.5 million and should be completed by the end of this year. The Golden Gopher Fund, the nonprofit branch of the university’s athletics department, has secured commitments for a little more than $7 million. Read More

Upgrades at Hormel Stadium
A new turf field, track and scoreboard are coming to Hormel Stadium in Medford, Mass. Medford High School currently uses the field only for football, but the new turf will also be lined for soccer and lacrosse. The new scoreboard will use LED technology. Improvements are expected to be completed by July 1. Read More

STC Commended for Field Donation
Highlighting the importance of community partnerships in increasing childhood fitness, the U.S. Department of Education recently commended the Synthetic Turf Council (STC) and its members for donating a new synthetic turf playing field to Stuart-Hobson Middle School in Washington, D.C. The 13,200-square-foot synthetic turf playing surface can be used by students year-round. Read More

FieldTurf Assists in New Orleans Rebuild
Joe Brown Park, a New Orleans football stadium that was wrecked by Hurricane Katrina is ready to reopen with a new FieldTurf surface. The facility plays host to many community-wide events and hopes to host numerous grand events in the near future. Mayor Mitch Landrieu said the improvements are designed to serve as an anchor for the community and as a magnet for more private investment. Read More
