wildflower bloomsClimate change affects wildflower bloom times
The Colorado mountain town of Crested Butte is widely known for its wildflowers—for decades, the area has played host to thousands of visitors for its annual wildflower festival. But the timing of this popular and much-anticipated event may have to change, thanks to the effect that climate change appears to have on the timing of blooms. A 39-year study by University of Maryland biology professor David Inouye shows that local wildflowers are blooming a month earlier than in 1974, when he first began to observe them, with blooms peaking earlier, continuing later and overlapping differently. Flowers that once bloomed at the same time now have staggered their displays, and bloom times appear to be changing rapidly. According to the research, the date of the first spring flower has advanced more than 6 days per decade during the course of the study. Flowering season is about a month longer than it used to be, which is quite lovely for tourists, but may have a strong impact on pollinating insects and migratory birds, including hummingbirds that depend on wildflower nectar.
