ANLAANLA governance votes to pursue consolidation with OFA
At its final meeting as a separate trade organization, the ANLA Senate voted unanimously to approve consolidation plans with OFA — The Association of Horticulture Professionals. The two organizations have combined forces and have been moving steadily toward the formation of a single horticulture industry association since last fall; the move will be put to formal vote of ANLA membership this September. The governing board met held July 13 in Columbus during the OFA Short Course. Read more here and here.

Village Nurseries Wholesale LLCVillage Nurseries buys Miramar
Village Nurseries Wholesale LLC, Orange, Calif., a specialty grower for landscape professionals, has purchased Miramar Wholesale Nurseries in San Diego. The deal represents one of the largest nursery acquisitions in California in many years and is expected to add $11 million to $12 million to Village Nurseries’ sales in 2014. Established in 1993, Miramar provides landscape plant materials for commercial property managers and landscape contractors in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Imperial and Riverside counties. Its 200-acre site houses a 170-acre wholesale operation, a commercial landscape center and an expert team of horticulturists. Read more>

Summit Plastic Co. and Nursery Supplies Inc.—which actually have been affiliated since 2006—have announced an official merger, “designed to offer a more comprehensive, innovative assortment of their complimentary products and services,” according to the companies. Here’s part of the scoop: “Nursery Supplies Inc. (Nursery), long a leader in the nursery sector of the horticulture industry (tree, shrub, foliage and woody ornamentals), offers a full product line from three distinct processes—blow and injection molded, and thermoformed containers ranging from trade gallon through 250+ gallons. With an extensive list of innovative solutions in square and round systems, Summit Plastic Company (Summit) offers customer-focused thermoformed packaging for growing, transporting and merchandising products in the color and perennial sectors.” Read more>

Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in VirginiaResearch institute launches tissue culture lab
The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research in Virginia has created Dan River Plants LLC as a tissue culture lab to “replicate high value horticulture and grasses that can be converted into bio-energy,” according to the IALR. Dan River Plants is rooted in technology developed by the Institute for Sustainable and Renewable Resources (ISRR). ISRR was created as a result of collaboration between the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech and the IALR. The company has secured propagation contracts with several wholesale growers and nurseries, and has expanded its product list to nearly 100 varieties. As a result, the company will soon begin hiring as many as 40 propagation technicians over the next few years. Read more>
